Look to the Bible as our guide in the future

Look to the Bible as our guide in the future. That’s a partial quote from one of our previous presidents. Any guesses as to who it was? Do you think he was Christian? Here are a couple clues. For decades after his death … … suffered a reputation as one of the nation’s worst presidents, consistently ranking in the bottom 10 in polls of historians.

Doesn't everyone love their friends?

Doesn’t everyone love their friends?

Doesn’t everyone love their friends? Jesus asked, “Do not even pagans do that?”  It was supposed to show that some of the things we Christians do aren’t anything special.  That’s what “even pagans do that” was about.  But what about the times when pagans do good things that even Christians don’t do?  What kind of questions should we be asking ourselves when we’re in that situation?

Should Christians be concerned about healthcare for the poor?

Should Christians be concerned about healthcare for the poor?

Should Christians be concerned about healthcare for the poor?  Of course, the answer is yes.  Isn’t it?  In theory, it’s hard to argue against the idea.  However, in practice, it’s apparently very easy to just ignore it.  Does that sound familiar?  If you’re Christian, it should resonate, loud and clear.  Even if you’re not Christian, chances are you know something about “the good Samaritan”.  Even if you don’t know where it came from, that concept is known by all sorts of people.

So let’s look at the question of healthcare for the poor in that light.  We’ll see what Jesus says on the topic.  After all, Jesus was the One who first put forth the idea of the good Samaritan.  And then we’ll see what happens today.  How we went from what Jesus taught, to a scenario where that’s pretty much impossible for all but the extremely wealthy people in the world, and how too many Christians have done the unneighborly thing by, well, by doing what we do.  We’ll look at that in a moment.

Would Jesus ever pander to the base?

Would Jesus ever pander to the base?

Would Jesus ever pander to the base?  It’s a question that Christians really need to ask themselves.  And I mean really stand in from of the mirror – look yourself in the eye – and ask, “Do you believe that Jesus would ever pander to the base?” Then, if you’re a Trump supporter, ask yourself how you reconcile his words and actions with what Jesus taught.

Last night, while more than 25 cities had riots raging over the police killing of George Floyd, the normally active Trump twitter account was largely silent.  There were but two Tweets – neither of which was helpful.  No calls for calm.  No words of hope.  Just lot’s of silence.

Is that really the kind of person Jesus wants us to support?  Or does He actually want us to convert that kind of person to be more like Him?
